Legends

Comics based on legends

Turning a legend into a comic is a classic school assignment. The trick is choosing the key moments and saving the mystery for the last panel.

Story ideas

La Llorona

A group of friends hears a wail by the river on a full-moon night.

The headless horseman

A schoolteacher rides home through the woods and hears hooves behind him.

The volcano lovers

The legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl told on a single page.

Your own legend

Invent the legend of a place in your neighborhood: the tree, the abandoned house, the corner.

Sample script: The house at the end of the street (invented legend)

  1. 1Big panel: an old house at the end of the street under the moon. Caption: “They say nobody has lived there for a hundred years…”
  2. 2Three friends dare each other to knock on the door. KNOCK KNOCK!
  3. 3The door creaks open by itself. CREEEAK!
  4. 4Inside, a table set for dinner with lit candles.
  5. 5A voice behind them: “Staying for dinner?” All three scream. AAAH!
  6. 6They run off. Caption: “Since then, nobody knocks on that door.”

Tips

  • Use captions for the narrator's voice: they give it the “legend has it…” tone.
  • Dark backgrounds and tall panels help build suspense.
  • For a traditional legend, tell only its 5 or 6 most important moments.
