Monetization and payments policy
This policy governs the monetization methods available on Histo, the requirements to take part and the payment process for authors.
Available monetization methods
Authors can earn income through the following methods:
1.1. Advertising
- Readers without an account see ads while they read; readers with a free or Premium account read without Google ads.
- Advertising revenue is calculated based on the number of views, with up to 30% going to the author.
1.2. Subscriptions
- The platform offers a premium membership program that lets users enjoy an ad-free experience.
- A reader's membership payment will be distributed proportionally among the different authors based on the number of views, with up to 70% going to the author.
- Annual plans (which are discounted) count for what was actually charged and are split into 12 parts, one for each month of the year they pay for.
1.3. Content sales
- Authors can offer chapters for a one-time payment.
- Readers can buy the complete comic at a discount.
- The author receives 95% of the revenue generated by the sale of their content.
1.4. Donations
- Readers can make voluntary contributions to authors through the author profile.
- The author receives 100% of the donations made by readers.
- Monthly patronage: verified authors can offer up to 5 support tiers. The reader's balance is charged each month, the author receives 100% and the patron earns a badge according to the tier. Readers can cancel at any time; the current month is not refunded.
1.5. Crowdfunding campaigns
- Authors can launch crowdfunding campaigns with a fixed funding goal, to which readers can contribute.
- If the campaign reaches its goal, the author will receive 95% of the funds in their account and may freely dispose of them.
- If the campaign does not reach its goal, the funds will not be transferred to the author and will be refunded in full to the readers who contributed.
Monetization requirements
To access monetization, authors must meet the following:
- Have published at least one work with one chapter.
- Have a verified account.
- Not have violated the Terms and Conditions or the Content Policy.
Tiered revenue-share program
The tiered revenue-share program determines authors' share of the revenue based on their impact within the platform.
3.1. Levels and revenue-share percentages
Each creator is classified into one of the seven available levels, and their share of the revenue increases as they meet the requirements of each level.
| Level | Rank | Revenue-share percentage (%) | Minimum followers | Minimum monthly interactions | Minimum published pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Beginner | 14% | 0 | 0 | 30 |
| 2 | Novice | 17% | 100 | 25 | 50 |
| 3 | Artisan | 21% | 300 | 75 | 100 |
| 4 | Creator | 28% | 500 | 125 | 150 |
| 5 | Veteran | 42% | 1000 | 250 | 200 |
| 6 | Master | 67% | 2000 | 500 | 500 |
| 7 | Legend | 100% | 5000 | 1250 | 1000 |
3.2. Application example
Suppose an author is at level 4, meeting the 500 followers, 125 monthly interactions and more than 150 pages published on the platform.
- The platform generated $10,000 USD from ads in one month.
- 30% of this revenue goes to creators ($3,000 USD).
- Suppose this creator generated 5% of the platform's total views, which gives them an allocation of $150 USD of the advertising revenue.
- Applying their level percentage:
- $150 USD × 28% = $42 USD for this creator.
- The platform generated $8,000 USD from premium subscriptions in one month.
- 70% of this revenue goes to creators ($5,600 USD).
- Suppose this creator's reads account for 4% of all reads on the platform, so they are entitled to $224 USD of the subscription revenue.
- Applying their level percentage:
- $224 USD × 28% = $62.72 USD for this creator.
- Advertising revenue: $42 USD
- Subscription revenue: $62.72 USD
Restrictions on tribute and AI-assisted works
- Tribute works, meaning those based on third-party characters, stories or universes without authorization, are not eligible for monetization and do not count toward the requirements of the tiered revenue-share program.
- Works assisted by artificial intelligence, whether entirely or in a significant part, are likewise not eligible for monetization and do not count toward the requirements of the tiered revenue-share program.
Author payments and fees
5.1. Payment methods
- Payments are made through PayPal or Payoneer.
- The author is responsible for providing correct and up-to-date payment details.
5.2. Payment frequency
Payments are processed monthly on the first day of the month. If the author has reached the minimum withdrawal threshold of $10.00 USD, they can request a withdrawal, which will be processed on the first day of the next month.
- If the author does not reach the minimum withdrawal threshold, the balance will accumulate until the minimum amount is reached and a withdrawal request can be made.
5.3. Taxes and withholdings
- Authors are responsible for reporting and paying taxes on their income.
- Histo may withhold taxes in accordance with the regulations applicable in the author's jurisdiction.
- Payment processors may apply additional charges for transactions, currency conversions or fees associated with transfers.
5.4. Platform fees
- The fees charged for transactions within the platform are detailed in each of the corresponding sections.
- Histo does not charge fees for withdrawing funds.
Refund and fraud policies
6.1. Refunds
- Subscriptions and content purchases may be subject to refunds in specific cases.
- If a payment is refunded, the revenue generated may be deducted from the author's balance.
6.2. Fraud and abuse
If fraudulent activity is detected, the author's account may be suspended and payments withheld.
Histo reserves the right to investigate and take action against any attempt at fraud or abuse on the platform.
Changes to the policy
- Histo may update this policy at any time.
- Authors will be notified of changes and must accept the new terms to continue using the monetization services.
